REFRESHER COURSE MODULE
4 .Modals - I
(Must, Must not, Can, Could)
LEARNING OUTCOMES :
•Using grammar items in context such as reporting verbs, passive and tense, time and tense etc
TEACHER ACTIVITY: 1
The teacher explains the use of ‘must' and 'must not' in the sentences as follows.
• Must' is used to express strong obligation.
• Must is used to express logical conclusion.
• Must' is used to express certainty. (say 95%)
• Must not is used to express prohibition.
a. The teacher shows some pictures and asks the students to look at them. Then he/she asks the students to come out with their own sentences.
Example: Sarala has toothache. She must consult a dentist.
• 'Can' is used for permission.
• Can' is used to express possibility.
• 'Could' is used to express ability in the past.
• 'Could' is used to ask for permission in a polite way.
• Could' is used to express possibility.
The teacher divides the students into pairs and writes some questions (like Can you swim? Canyou play Football? Can you climb trees? Can you cook? Can you draw? Can you play Kho-kho?) on small papers and gives each student a paper. The student reads the paper and then takes it in turns to ask his/her partner as 'Can you...?'e.g. Can you swim?' If the partner replies ' Yes, I can swim', the student finds out when he/she was first able to do it by asking "When could you first do this?' The partner replies and the student asks suitable follow-up questions. e.g. Where did you learn to swim?' Afterwards, the student gives feedback to the class on what he/ she found out about his/her partner, e.g. Mohan can swim. He could first do this when he was 5 years old. He learnt to swim at the river', etc.
STUDENT ACTIVITY: 1
a. The teacher makes the students understand where to use 'must in sentences. The teacher asks the students to match the first part of the sentence with its second part.
1. He didn't pass the test, - a ) it must have avirus
2. The teacher didn't arrive, - b ) his patient must be very ill.
3. They are wearing woolen clothes, - c ) he must be sad
4. This computer is very slow, - d ) there must be traffic
5. The doctor looked worried and sad, - e ) it must be could there
Ans :
1. He didn't pass the test - he must be sad
2 ) The teacher did'nt arrive - there must be traffic
3 ) They are wearing woolen clothes - it must be cold there
4 ) This computer is very slow - it must have a virus.
5 ) The docter looked worried and sad - his patient must be very ill.
b. The teacher makes the students frame sentences using the clues given. The students have to
use 'must' in their sentences.
1. obey-parents
Ans : We must obey our parents.
2. follow-traffic rules.
Ans : Every one must follow the traffic rules.
3. silent - library
Ans : We must keep silence in the library
4. tell-truth
Ans : You must tell the truth.
STUDENT ACTIVITY: 2
The teacher divides the students into pairs and shows some pictures. The students should look at the pictures. The teacher asks them to explain about the effects of the situations given in the pictures using could
1. Heavy Rain
Ans : We could not go out because of heavy rain
2. Junk Food
Ans : We could not take junk food only in a rare occations.
3. Rash Driving
Ans : Rash driving could leane to grave situations.
4. Wasting Water
Ans : Wasting water could lead to scarity.
2 ) You must not take junk food. It is not good for health.
